I only packed warm-weather clothing for this trip, planning to purchase any clothes needed FOR India IN India. I spent a few days shopping when I arrived here, already sick of the few things I had been wearing all over Sri Lanka and Maldives.
I was quickly reminded of the hurt-feelings experience that is shopping in Asia. In the first store the shopkeeper kept demonstrating that all of the clothes will STRETCH. "Big," he said, while STRETCHING the fabric. Incredulous, I replied, "Will these clothes make it around all of my FAT? All of it?" while pointing to and around my stomach. He smiled and nodded, pleased to be helping. "Yes!" he exclaimed.
At the second store I hunkered down. All the tunics and leggings were adorable and I knew I'd be buying several items. However, I needed to now what size I was to get started. I explained that I think I'm a bigger size here, and could he help me determine which? He replied, "No...it's the same. India women are fat too."

Hmm considering most Indian men I've seen seem to have a fairly present belly, the fat comments seem a bit rude! You're now where near chubby, let alone fat!
